2 Samuel 23:36

Listen to this article

“Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.”

This verse appears at the end of a list of names found in 2 Samuel 23:34-39, which recounts the names of David’s mighty men. These were renowned warriors who served under King David during his reign.

In this specific verse, Uriah the Hittite is mentioned. Uriah is famously known from earlier in the biblical narrative in 2 Samuel 11. He was one of David’s most loyal and valiant warriors.

However, tragically, David committed adultery with Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba, and then arranged for Uriah’s death in battle to cover up the sin and marry Bathsheba.

The mention of Uriah the Hittite in this list is significant because it serves as a reminder of David’s wrongdoing and the consequences of his actions. It highlights the tragic and unjust treatment of a faithful servant by the hands of his own king.

It also emphasizes the serious repercussions of David’s actions as the consequences of his sin continued to affect him and his kingdom.

This verse, along with the entire list of mighty men in 2 Samuel 23:34-39 serves as a record of the warriors who were loyal to David and fought alongside him. It demonstrates the valor and dedication of these individuals who risked their lives for their king.

Despite the inclusion of Uriah’s name in this list it is important to note that his story is a cautionary tale rather than a celebration of his achievements.

Overall, 2 Samuel 23:36 reminds us of the complex and flawed nature of human characters in the Bible. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of our actions, even for those who have great power or influence. It also encourages us to examine our own lives and strive to act with integrity and righteousness in all circumstances.
