Numbers 4:28
This is the seruice of the families of the sonnes of Gershon, in the Tabernacle of the Congregation: and their charge shalbe vnder the hande of Ithamar the sonne of Aaron the Priest. Numbers 4:28 (KJV)
The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and it continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, the focus is on the service and responsibilities assigned to the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation.
The Gershonites were one of the three Levitical clans responsible for the service in the tabernacle. The other two clans were the Kohathites and the Merarites. The Levites were set apart by God to assist the priests (descendants of Aaron) in the tabernacle worship and to carry out various duties related to the sanctuary.
And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.
According to the commandment of Aaron and his sons, all the service of the sons of Gershonites was to be conducted. The priests, who were descendants of Aaron, held the highest positions of authority within the Levite order. Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest, was given authority over the Merarites and was responsible for overseeing their service in the tabernacle. However, there is an inconsistency between Numbers 4:28 and Numbers 3:30 regarding Ithamar’s oversight.
The verse highlights the meticulous organization and division of labor among the various Levitical clans. This demonstrates the importance of order and coordination within the community of believers, ensuring that each person plays their part effectively for the functioning of the whole.
The Gershonites were entrusted with specific responsibilities related to the tabernacle. Their service required faithfulness and attention to detail. Similarly, as believers, we are called to be faithful in the tasks and responsibilities that God has given us, recognizing that even seemingly small or behind-the-scenes roles can contribute to the greater purpose.
The Gershonites served under the authority of Aaron and his sons, representing the priestly leadership. The Merarites served under the authority of Ithamar, who represented the priestly leadership. This highlights the importance of submitting to those in positions of authority within the church and recognizing the value of working together in unity for the advancement of God’s kingdom.
The tabernacle was not only a physical structure but also a symbol of God’s presence among His people. It foreshadowed the coming of Jesus Christ, who would become the ultimate dwelling place of God through His incarnation.
Overall, Numbers 4:28 provides insight into the specific responsibilities of the Gershonites and the organizational structure within the tabernacle. It encourages us to faithfully fulfill our assigned tasks, submit to godly leadership, and recognize the significance of God’s presence in our lives.
