Listen to this article

“And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.”

Background:First Kings 10 describes the visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon. The Queen of Sheba had heard of Solomon’s wisdom and wealth and came to test him with hard questions. She brought a great retinue, spices, and precious stones as gifts for Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba’s visit: The Queen of Sheba’s arrival: The verse mentions that she came to Jerusalem with a very great train or procession, which included camels bearing spices, gold, and precious stones. Her entourage must have been impressive, emphasizing her wealth and importance.

b. Her purpose: When the Queen of Sheba arrived, she had a desire to commune or have a conversation with King Solomon. She had heard about his wisdom and accomplishments, and she came to discuss matters that were on her heart. It indicates that she had questions and sought his wisdom and counsel.

Lessons from 1 Kings 10:

  • The importance of seeking wisdom:The Queen of Sheba’s journey reflects the value she placed on wisdom. She recognised Solomon’s reputation for wisdom and sought to learn from him. As believers, we should also seek wisdom, both from God’s Word and from wise and godly individuals who can guide us.
  • The significance of genuine inquiry:The Queen of Sheba didn’t approach Solomon with flattery or empty words. She had genuine questions and concerns in her heart that she desired to discuss with him. Likewise, in our approach to God and other wise individuals, it is essential to come with sincerity and genuine inquiries.
  • The value of sharing knowledge:Solomon had been blessed with wisdom from God, and the Queen of Sheba recognised the value of his insights. Similarly, as believers, we should be willing to share the knowledge and wisdom we have received with others. We should be open to conversations where we can impart God’s truth and understanding to those who seek it.
  • The importance of discernment:Although the Queen of Sheba sought Solomon’s wisdom, she also tested him with difficult questions. It shows her discernment and desire to assess the authenticity of his reputation. As believers, we should also exercise discernment in our search for wisdom and be willing to ask challenging questions to test the truth and validity of what we hear.

Application:

  • Seek wisdom:Take intentional steps to seek wisdom, both through personal study of the Bible and through seeking godly counsel.
  • Approach with sincerity:When seeking advice or discussing matters with others, come with sincerity, genuine inquiries, and a humble attitude.
  • Share knowledge:Be willing to share the knowledge and wisdom you have received from God with others, being open to conversations that allow you to impart truth.
  • Exercise discernment:When seeking wisdom, test the teachings and advice you receive against God’s Word. Be willing to ask difficult questions and seek clarification when needed.

Remember, this passage is just a small part of the larger story of the Queen of Sheba’s visit to Solomon. Exploring the entire chapter and related passages can provide further insights into the significance of this encounter.
