Listen to this article

“Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore made he thee king, to do judgment and justice.”

Context:In order to understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to consider its surrounding context. Prior to Queen Sheba’s visit, Solomon’s reputation for wisdom, wealth, and accomplishments had reached her ears. She came to test him with hard questions, and after witnessing Solomon’s wisdom and the splendor of his kingdom, she praised God and expressed her admiration for Solomon’s God‑given wisdom.

Praise and Recognition of God:The verse begins with a blessing and praise to the Lord, the God of Solomon. The Queen of Sheba acknowledges that God delighted in Solomon and placed him on the throne of Israel. This recognition of God’s role in Solomon’s kingship emphasises that Solomon’s success and wisdom were a direct result of God’s favour and divine appointment.

God’s Everlasting Love for Israel:The verse continues by stating that the Lord loved Israel forever. This statement emphasises God’s enduring love for His chosen people. Despite their shortcomings and rebellions, God’s love for Israel remains constant throughout generations. God’s love for Israel is rooted in His covenant with Abraham and His commitment to fulfil His promises to the nation.

Divine Appointment for Justice and Judgment:The verse concludes by highlighting the purpose of Solomon’s kingship. God made Solomon king to execute judgment and justice. Solomon was not only blessed with wisdom but was also called to govern with righteousness, upholding the principles of justice and fairness. Solomon’s role as king included the responsibility of ensuring that the people were treated justly and that justice prevailed within the kingdom.

Overall, 1 Kings 10:9 demonstrates the recognition of God’s sovereignty and His role in Solomon’s success. It emphasises God’s everlasting love for Israel and reminds us of the importance of justice and judgment in leadership. As believers, we can learn from Solomon’s example and strive to seek wisdom from God, recognise His role in our lives, and fulfil our responsibilities with justice and righteousness.
