“That Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child.”

Context:1 Kings 11:17 is a verse found in the Old Testament, specifically in the book of 1 Kings. This verse comes in the midst of a narrative about King Solomon, who was known for his wisdom and the vastness of his kingdom. However, Solomon’s later years were marked by disobedience to God’s commands, particularly in the area of idolatry and marrying foreign wives.

Historical Background:In this chapter, we learn about Hadad, an Edomite, who fled to Egypt to escape from Solomon. The Edomites were descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob (Israel). Hadad’s flight to Egypt was most likely a response to Solomon’s attempts to consolidate power and maintain control over the region.

Political Tensions:Hadad’s flight to Egypt indicates that there were political tensions and potential threats to Solomon’s rule. Hadad, as a member of the Edomite royal family, may have posed a challenge or be perceived as a threat to Solomon’s kingdom.

Divine Providence:Although not explicitly mentioned in this verse, we can see God’s hand at work in the events surrounding Hadad’s escape. God had forbidden the Israelites from intermarrying with foreign nations and worshiping their gods (Deuteronomy 7:1-4). Solomon’s disobedience to this command had consequences, and the rise of potential adversaries like Hadad was part of God’s judgment.

Symbolic Meaning:Hadad’s flight to Egypt as a young child is significant because it sets the stage for future conflicts and challenges that would arise for Solomon and his successors. It foreshadows the ongoing tensions between Israel and the surrounding nations, which would eventually lead to the division and downfall of the united kingdom.

Lessons for Today:

  • Obedience to God’s commands:Solomon’s disobedience to God’s instructions led to consequences for himself and the nation. It serves as a reminder for us to heed God’s Word and live according to His principles.
  • The dangers of compromise:Solomon’s alliances through marriage with foreign women led to idolatry and compromised his devotion to God. We should be cautious about compromising our faith and values for the sake of worldly gain or relationships.
  • God’s sovereignty:Even in the midst of human choices and political turmoil, God remains in control. He can use circumstances and individuals to fulfill His purposes, and His plan will ultimately prevail.

Overall, 1 Kings 11:17 provides a glimpse into the political tensions and consequences resulting from Solomon’s disobedience. It reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands, the dangers of compromise, and the assurance that God is sovereign over all things.
