1 Kings 11:3

“And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that describes the reign of King Solomon who succeeded his father, King David, as the ruler of Israel. Solomon was known for his wisdom and wealth, but unfortunately, he also made some unwise choices that ultimately led to his downfall.

In this particular verse, it is mentioned that Solomon had a vast number of wives and concubines. The number is specified as seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. This enormous harem of women was a clear violation of the commands of God, as stated in Deuteronomy 17:17, where the future king of Israel was instructed not to multiply wives for himself. Solomon’s actions were in direct disobedience to God’s law.

The verse also highlights a significant consequence of Solomon’s actions. It states that his wives turned away his heart. This indicates that the foreign wives and their idolatrous practices influenced Solomon to turn away from the worship of the one true God, Yahweh, and instead engage in the worship of false gods. This was a severe departure from his earlier devotion to God.

Solomon’s choice to intermarry with foreign women from nations that did not worship Yahweh led him astray spiritually. As a result, he built high places for the worship of foreign gods and even participated in their worship, disregarding the covenant that God had made with Israel.

The Bible goes on to explain that God was angry with Solomon because of his actions, and He raised adversaries against him. Eventually, God tore the kingdom away from Solomon’s descendants, and Israel was divided into two separate kingdoms.

This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying God’s commands and staying faithful to Him. It warns against compromising one’s faith by engaging in practices that are contrary to God’s will. It shows the destructive consequences that can arise when we allow worldly influences to turn our hearts away from God.

Overall, 1 Kings 11:3 teaches us the importance of remaining steadfast in our devotion to God, guarding our hearts against the allurements of the world, and seeking His wisdom and guidance in all aspects of our lives.
