“And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.”

Context:The book of 1 Kings is a historical account that chronicles the reigns of the kings of Israel and Judah, focusing on the moral and spiritual lessons derived from their actions. It provides insight into the political, social, and religious dynamics of the period. In this particular verse, we encounter a request made by Adonijah, the son of David and a contender for the throne, to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon.

Adonijah’s request:Adonijah approaches Bathsheba, the queen mother, with a petition. He asks her to intercede on his behalf and request that King Solomon give him Abishag the Shunammite as his wife. Abishag was a young woman who had served as a companion and caretaker to David in his old age.

Political implications:Adonijah’s request carries political implications. In ancient Near Eastern cultures, taking possession of a former king’s concubine or wife was often considered a symbol of asserting one’s claim to the throne. By asking for Abishag, Adonijah may be attempting to assert his right to rule or gain influence over Solomon.

Bathsheba’s role:Bathsheba plays an important role in this exchange. As the queen mother and influential figure in the royal court, she is approached by Adonijah, who hopes that she can sway Solomon’s decision in his favour. Bathsheba agrees to deliver the message to Solomon, recognising that he is unlikely to refuse her request.

Solomon’s response:The verse doesn’t explicitly state Solomon’s response, but based on the context of the story, we can infer that he does not grant Adonijah’s request. Instead, Solomon perceives this request as an attempt by Adonijah to undermine his authority and potentially make a claim to the throne. Consequently, Solomon views Adonijah’s request as a threat to his rule and takes decisive action against him in the following verses.

  • The consequences of political ambition:Adonijah’s request highlights the dangers of political ambition and the lengths some individuals may go to secure power. It serves as a cautionary example of how personal agendas and attempts to undermine the legitimate authority can lead to adverse consequences.
  • The importance of wise leadership:Solomon’s response to Adonijah’s request reveals his discernment and wisdom as a leader. He recognises the potential threat posed by Adonijah’s actions and takes appropriate measures to preserve the stability of his reign. This underscores the importance of wise and discerning leadership in maintaining order and justice.
  • The role of intercession:Bathsheba’s involvement demonstrates the power of intercession. Adonijah approaches Bathsheba, recognising her influence and hoping she can sway Solomon’s decision. Similarly, in our own lives, we can bring our petitions and requests before God, seeking His intervention and guidance in various situations.
  • The need for integrity and loyalty:Adonijah’s request reveals his lack of integrity and loyalty to the newly established king, Solomon. It serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and faithfulness in our relationships, particularly when it comes to honouring authority and respecting the decisions made by those in positions of leadership.
