1 Kings 2:19

Listen to this article

“Bathsheba, therefore, went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right hand.”

Context:The context of this verse is set in the aftermath of King David’s death. David had multiple sons, and there was a question of succession. Adonijah, one of David’s sons, had previously made an attempt to seize the throne for himself, but he was thwarted by David’s intervention, who declared Solomon as his successor.

Bathsheba’s Visit:Bathsheba, who was the mother of Solomon and the widow of David, goes to Solomon to make a request on behalf of Adonijah. The exact nature of her request is not mentioned explicitly in this verse, but it is believed that she sought mercy or favour for Adonijah, perhaps asking Solomon to spare his life or grant him a position of influence.

Solomon’s Response:When Solomon sees his mother Bathsheba approaching, he rises from his throne, showing her great respect. He then bows down to her, which demonstrates his honour and submission to her as his mother. Solomon then goes a step further by arranging for a seat to be placed at his right hand for his mother to sit on. This position of honour signifies Bathsheba’s importance and authority as the queen mother.

Symbolism:This interaction between Solomon and Bathsheba carries symbolic significance. In ancient Israel, the queen mother held a position of influence and authority, often serving as an advisor to the king. By seating Bathsheba at his right hand, Solomon acknowledges her as a trusted advisor and shows respect for her wisdom and position.

Lessons:This verse highlights several valuable lessons. It teaches us the importance of honouring and respecting our parents, even when we hold positions of authority or responsibility. It also demonstrates the value of seeking wisdom and guidance from trusted individuals, such as parents or mentors, when making important decisions. Additionally, this verse reminds us of the significance of showing humility and giving honour to others, regardless of our own status or position.

Overall, 1 Kings 2:19 captures a pivotal moment in the relationship between Solomon and Bathsheba, showcasing their respect, honour, and the wisdom they shared.
