1 Kings 3:10

“And the speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing.”

This verse is part of the account where Solomon, the son of David, becomes king of Israel. In this particular passage, Solomon had a dream in which God appeared to him and said, “Ask what I shall give thee” (1 Kings 3:5, KJV). Solomon responded with humility and a desire for wisdom, asking God for an understanding heart to govern the people of Israel with justice and discernment (1 Kings 3:9).

The context:Before we explore the verse itself, it’s essential to understand the context. Solomon had just inherited the throne from his father, David, who was known as a man after God’s own heart. Solomon desired to lead the people of Israel faithfully and sought divine guidance to fulfill his responsibilities as king.

Solomon’s request:Solomon’s request for wisdom and an understanding heart demonstrated his humility and recognition of his need for God’s guidance. Instead of asking for wealth, power, or personal gain, he desired wisdom to govern the people justly and discernment to make wise decisions.

God’s response:In response to Solomon’s request, the verse states that “the speech pleased the Lord.” This implies that God was pleased with Solomon’s humble request for wisdom and discernment rather than selfish desires. It shows that God values a heart that seeks wisdom and desires to serve others faithfully.

God’s approval:By expressing His pleasure with Solomon’s request, God demonstrates His approval and grants Solomon’s petition. Later in the chapter, God affirms Solomon’s request by giving him exceptional wisdom, surpassing that of any other person (1 Kings 3:12).

Application:This passage encourages us to prioritise wisdom and discernment in our own lives. Instead of seeking worldly pursuits, we should desire godly wisdom that enables us to make wise decisions and serve others faithfully. We can also learn from Solomon’s humility and recognise our dependence on God’s guidance in every area of our lives.

In summary 1 Kings 3:10 highlights Solomon’s humble request for wisdom, which pleased the Lord. It reminds us of the importance of seeking godly wisdom and discernment in our own lives, and how God is pleased when we prioritise wisdom over selfish desires.
