“And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.”

This verse is part of the story of King Solomon and his famous wisdom. It recounts a situation in which two women came before King Solomon, both claiming to be the mother of a living child. Their dispute needed resolution, and Solomon, known for his wisdom, was asked to judge the matter.

To fully understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to consider the context:Prior to this verse, both women had given birth to sons, but one of the infants died. The living child was being claimed by both women, leading to a heated disagreement.

In 1 Kings 3:16-28, we find the full account of this story. When Solomon was presented with the case, he proposed a solution that would reveal the true mother. He ordered a sword to be brought and suggested cutting the living child in two so that each woman could have a portion. The woman whose maternal instincts were genuine would rather give up her claim than see harm come to her child.

Verse 17:one of the women pleaded with King Solomon, acknowledging that both women lived in the same house and that she had given birth to her child while the other woman was also present in the house. This woman’s desperation to protect her child reveals her true motherly love and highlights the key point of Solomon’s wisdom test.

The passage continues to verse 18 and beyond, where Solomon discerns the true mother based on the response to his proposed solution. The genuine mother begged Solomon not to harm the child and to give him to the other woman instead. This demonstrated her selfless love and concern for the well‑being of her child, which led Solomon to determine her as the true mother.

The story of Solomon’s wisdom in discerning the true mother has become a well-known example of his wise judgment and has been referenced in various contexts throughout history.

This passage can serve as a lesson to us about the importance of selflessness, sacrificial love, and genuine concern for the well‑being of others, especially when it comes to the lives of our children. It also demonstrates the wisdom and discernment that God had given to King Solomon, allowing him to make just decisions in difficult situations.

Overall, 1 Kings 3:17 highlights the crucial moment when one woman’s plea and acknowledgement of the shared house became a turning point in Solomon’s judgment, ultimately leading to the resolution of the dispute and the preservation of the child’s life.
