“Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof”

Context:1 Kings 3:27 is part of the account of King Solomon’s famous wisdom and judgment. In this chapter, Solomon had a dream where God appeared to him and offered to grant him anything he desired. Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God’s people effectively. God was pleased with his request and granted him not only wisdom but also riches and honour.

  • “Give her the living child”: Two women came to Solomon claiming to be the mother of the same baby. Solomon devised a test to determine the true mother. He suggested dividing the child in half so that each woman could have a portion. The real mother immediately expressed her desire for the baby to live and be given to the other woman, revealing her true motherly love.
  • “In no wise slay it”: Solomon’s response shows his wisdom and discernment. He quickly realised that the true mother would rather give up her claim to the child than see it harmed. By commanding to give the living child to the woman who showed compassion and selflessness, Solomon demonstrated his understanding of the situation.
  • “She is the mother thereof”: Solomon’s judgment affirmed the woman’s claim to motherhood based on her love and willingness to protect the child’s life. He recognised the true mother’s genuine concern for the child’s well‑being, which led to his decision to give the baby to her.

Themes and Lessons:

  • Wisdom: This passage highlights Solomon’s God‑given wisdom and his ability to discern the truth in a complex situation. It serves as a demonstration of the wisdom God granted him in response to his humble request. It teaches us the importance of seeking wisdom from God and using it to make righteous decisions.
  • Motherly Love: The mother’s willingness to sacrifice her own desires and give up her claim to the child reveals the depth of her love and care. This story emphasises the significance of selflessness and unconditional love in parenting. It also points to the sacrificial love of God, who gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, for the salvation of humanity.
  • Justice and Fairness: Solomon’s judgment was fair and just, as he discerned the truth and awarded custody of the child to the rightful mother. This passage highlights the importance of seeking justice and making fair decisions, guided by wisdom and discernment.

Application:

  • Seek God’s wisdom:Like Solomon, we should seek God’s wisdom in all aspects of our lives. When faced with difficult decisions, we can pray and ask for His guidance and discernment.
  • Cultivate sacrificial love:The mother’s love in this story serves as a powerful example. We should strive to love others sacrificially, putting their needs before our own. This includes our relationships with our children, family, friends, and even strangers.
  • Pursue justice and fairness:We should aim to make just and fair decisions in our interactions with others. We can seek to understand the truth, consider all perspectives, and act with integrity and fairness.
  • Appreciate God’s wisdom:Reflect on the story of Solomon’s wisdom and be grateful for the wisdom God has given you. Recognise that true wisdom comes from God and use it for His glory and the benefit of others.

Remember, Bible study is a personal and transformative experience, so take the time to meditate on the passage, pray for understanding, and consider how it applies to your own life.
