1 Kings 3:28

Listen to this article

“And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged, and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.”

Context:Before we delve into verse 28, let’s understand the context of this passage. In 1 Kings 3, King Solomon was visited by two women who came before him with a dispute concerning a baby. Both women claimed to be the mother of the same child, and they sought the king’s wisdom to settle the matter.

Solomon’s Wisdom:In verses 16-27, Solomon proposed a solution to divide the child in half with a sword, with each woman receiving an equal portion. One woman agreed, but the other woman, the true mother, pleaded for the baby’s life, offering to give up her claim so that the child would live.

Divine Wisdom:This verse highlights the outcome of Solomon’s wise judgment in the baby dispute. Word of the king’s decision spread throughout Israel, and the people recognised that the wisdom he displayed was not merely human but divinely inspired. They understood that God’s wisdom was evident in Solomon, enabling him to render just judgments.

Reverence for God:The response of the people to Solomon’s judgment was awe and fear. The fear mentioned here is not the dread or terror associated with being afraid, but rather a reverential fear or awe. It indicates a recognition of God’s presence and power working through Solomon, and the people responded with respect and honour.

Lessons for Us:This passage teaches us several important lessons:

  • The importance of seeking God’s wisdom when faced with difficult decisions or disputes.
  • God’s wisdom surpasses human understanding and can provide guidance and solutions in challenging situations.
  • When we operate in God’s wisdom, it can have a profound impact on those around us and draw their attention to the work of God in our lives.
  • People are drawn to those who display godly wisdom, and it can evoke reverence and respect for God.

Application:As believers, we can learn from Solomon’s example and seek God’s wisdom in our own lives. We can pray for discernment and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us in making decisions. When we demonstrate wisdom rooted in God’s Word, it can have a positive influence on those around us and give glory to God.

Remember, 1 Kings 3:28 (KJV) highlights the unique wisdom that God bestowed upon Solomon, and it reminds us of the importance of seeking and relying on God’s wisdom in our own lives.
