1 Kings 3:4

“And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.”

1 Kings 3:4 takes us to a pivotal moment in the life of King Solomon, son of David, who succeeded his father as the ruler of Israel. This verse highlights an important event in Solomon’s early reign, where he went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices.

Gibeon was a significant location in Israel, known as a “great high place.” It was an elevated area where people would gather for worship and sacrifices. The fact that Solomon chose to go to Gibeon signifies his devotion to God and his desire to seek divine guidance.

The verse mentions that Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings upon the altar at Gibeon. Burnt offerings were a common practice in the Old Testament, where animals were sacrificed on the altar as an act of worship and atonement for sins. This large number of sacrifices demonstrates Solomon’s dedication to God and his desire for a close relationship with Him.

This event is particularly significant because it sets the stage for the subsequent events in Solomon’s life. Following these sacrifices, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him an opportunity to ask for whatever he desired (1 Kings 3:5). Solomon humbly asked for wisdom to govern the people of Israel effectively (1 Kings 3:9). Pleased with Solomon’s request, God granted him wisdom beyond measure, along with riches and honour (1 Kings 3:10-13).

1 Kings 3:4 encourages us to reflect on the importance of seeking God’s guidance and wisdom in our own lives. Solomon’s act of offering sacrifices demonstrates his commitment to God and his recognition of the need for divine direction. It also highlights the principle found throughout the Bible that God honours those who seek Him sincerely and humbly.

In conclusion, 1 Kings 3:4 showcases King Solomon’s visit to Gibeon to offer sacrifices and the subsequent encounter with God in a dream. This verse underscores the significance of seeking God’s wisdom and guidance in our lives, reminding us of the blessings that come from a genuine pursuit of a relationship with Him.
