“In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.”

Context:The book of 1 Kings recounts the reign of Solomon, the son of King David, over the united kingdom of Israel. In this particular passage, Solomon has just become king, and he travels to Gibeon to offer sacrifices to the Lord. It is during his time in Gibeon that God appears to him in a dream.

The Setting:Gibeon was an important city in ancient Israel, and it housed the tabernacle and the bronze altar. Solomon went there to seek the Lord and make offerings to Him. It is noteworthy that God chose this specific location to reveal Himself to Solomon.

Divine Encounter:In this verse, the Lord appears to Solomon in a dream during the night. Dreams were a common means by which God communicated with His people in the Old Testament. This demonstrates God’s desire to have a personal relationship with Solomon and to communicate His will to him.

God’s Invitation:The Lord speaks to Solomon and tells him to ask for whatever he desires, as God is ready to grant it. This invitation reveals God’s generosity and His willingness to bless Solomon abundantly. It also shows that God wants Solomon to seek Him and to make a request that aligns with His purposes.

Solomon’s Response:As we continue reading, we discover Solomon’s humble and wise reply to God’s invitation in the subsequent verses. He acknowledges his own inadequacy and the monumental task of leading God’s people, expressing a desire for wisdom and discernment to govern with righteousness and justice.

The Outcome:God is pleased with Solomon’s response, and He grants his request for wisdom. In the following verses, God commends Solomon’s choice and promises to give him not only wisdom but also riches and honour, surpassing any other king.

Application:This passage teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it emphasises the value of seeking God’s presence and guidance in our lives. Solomon made the effort to go to Gibeon and offer sacrifices, demonstrating his commitment to worshiping God. Secondly, it highlights the importance of humility before God. Solomon recognised his own limitations and relied on God for wisdom and discernment. Finally, it showcases God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. Solomon’s choice to seek wisdom pleased God, who then blessed him with more than he had asked for.

In summary, 1 Kings 3:5 teaches us about the importance of seeking God’s presence, the value of humility in our approach to God, and God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It is a powerful reminder of God’s desire to bless His people when they seek Him with sincerity and align their hearts with His will.
