1 Kings 6:22

“And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to provide some context. In 1 Kings 6, we read about the construction of the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. This temple was a magnificent structure dedicated to the worship of God and was built according to God’s instructions.

Overlaid with Gold:In 1 Kings 6:20-22, it is described that Solomon covered the walls of the temple, as well as the altar, with gold. The use of gold was a symbol of beauty, splendour, and the holiness of the house of God. The temple was intended to be a place of worship and reverence for the Israelites, and the lavish use of gold emphasised the sacredness of the space.

Symbolism:The choice to overlay the entire house and the altar with gold holds symbolic significance. Gold is often associated with purity, value, and divinity. By covering the temple with gold, Solomon was showing his commitment to honouring God and offering the best of everything for His worship. It also represented the exalted nature of God’s presence and the importance of approaching Him with reverence and awe.

The Oracle:The verse mentions that the altar by the oracle, which refers to the innermost part of the temple where the Ark of the Covenant was kept, was also overlaid with gold. The altar in the holy place was where sacrifices were offered to God. By overlaying it with gold, it was a clear indication that even the place of offering sacrifices should be adorned with the utmost beauty and reverence.

Spiritual Application:While the physical temple described in 1 Kings 6 may no longer exist, there are spiritual lessons we can draw from this passage. Just as the temple was a place of worship and reverence for God, our bodies and hearts are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We are called to present ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1). The symbolism of gold reminds us that we are to offer our best to God, both in our actions and in our devotion. We should seek to honour God with our whole being, recognising His holiness and the privilege of worshiping Him.

In conclusion, 1 Kings 6:22 highlights the extravagant use of gold in overlaying the temple and the altar, symbolising the beauty, splendour, and holiness of the house of God. It teaches us to offer our best to God, approaching Him with reverence and awe, and recognising that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
