1 Kings 8:52

Listen to this article

“That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s first look at its context. 1 Kings 8 records the dedication of Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem. After Solomon finishes his prayer of dedication, he blesses the assembly of Israel and then turns to address God directly. In verse 52, Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness and prays for His continued presence and attention to the people’s prayers.

God’s Response:Solomon prays that God would “hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.” This reveals Solomon’s desire for God to not only hear their prayers but also to answer them and grant their requests according to His will. Solomon acknowledges that God is the source of their help and blessing and seeks His continued favour.

Application:As we reflect on 1 Kings 8:52, we can draw several lessons for our own lives:

  • Confidence in God’s attentiveness:Solomon’s prayer reflects his confidence in God’s willingness to hear the prayers of His people. We too can approach God with confidence, knowing that He is attentive to our needs and concerns.
  • Humble dependence:Solomon refers to himself as God’s servant, acknowledging his own humility and dependence on God. This teaches us the importance of approaching God with humility, recognising that we are wholly dependent on Him for everything.
  • Persistence in prayer:Solomon’s prayer for God to hearken unto the supplication of His people highlights the importance of persistence in prayer. We should continue to bring our requests before God, trusting in His faithfulness and timing.
  • Seeking God’s will:Solomon’s prayer is not merely focused on getting what he wants but on aligning the people’s requests with God’s will. We should likewise seek God’s will in our prayers, submitting our desires to Him and trusting that He knows what is best for us.

Overall, 1 Kings 8:52 reminds us of the importance of prayer, faith, and dependence on God. It encourages us to approach Him with confidence, knowing that He hears our prayers and responds according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
