Listen to this article

“And king Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red sea, in the land of Edom.”

This verse refers to King Solomon’s construction of a navy or fleet of ships in a location called Ezion-Geber, which was situated near Eloth, along the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom.

Context and Background:1 Kings 9:26 comes after the completion of Solomon’s temple and the dedication ceremony, as mentioned in the preceding verses. Solomon had also finished building his own palace and other structures (1 Kings 9:1-10).

  • During Solomon’s reign, the nation of Israel enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity, including flourishing trade and alliances with neighboring nations.
  • This verse signifies Solomon’s maritime ventures and his efforts to develop a navy for trade and exploration purposes.

Significance and Symbolism:

  • Solomon’s construction of a navy reflected his desire to expand Israel’s influence and engage in commerce and exploration beyond the borders of his kingdom.
  • The navy was built in Ezion-Geber, a port city located near Eloth, which was a prominent trading hub at the time. This strategic location allowed Solomon’s navy to have access to the Red Sea, enabling trade with countries across the sea.
  • This verse highlights Solomon’s efforts to establish diplomatic ties and expand Israel’s influence beyond its immediate surroundings, potentially opening up avenues for the spread of knowledge and the influence of the wisdom associated with Solomon.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Diligence and industry:Solomon’s construction of a navy showcases his industriousness and vision. It reminds us of the importance of hard work and using our resources wisely to achieve our goals.
  • Strategic decision-making:Solomon’s choice of the location for his navy illustrates the importance of strategic planning and decision-making. It’s crucial to consider geographical factors, resources, and opportunities when pursuing our endeavors.
  • Expanding influence:Solomon’s desire to engage in trade and form alliances serves as a reminder of the importance of positively impacting the world around us. We can aim to share our resources, knowledge, and wisdom with others, contributing to the betterment of society.

The location of Ezion-Geber and Eloth highlights the vastness of Solomon’s kingdom and its access to major trade routes, including the Red Sea. It indicates Israel’s active involvement in maritime trade during that era.

The maritime activities of Solomon’s navy foreshadow the later importance of maritime trade and the growth of seafaring nations in the region, such as the Phoenicians.

It’s worth noting that while this verse primarily focuses on Solomon’s navy, the subsequent verses in 1 Kings 9 describe Solomon’s partnership with King Hiram of Tyre and the joint maritime ventures they undertook together.

Studying this verse provides insights into Solomon’s reign, his pursuit of prosperity and influence, and the importance of diligent planning and decision-making.
