“And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments.”

Context:This verse is part of a dialogue between God and Solomon after the completion of the temple in Jerusalem. God appeared to Solomon a second time to reaffirm His promises and warn him about the consequences of turning away from Him.

Walking before God:The phrase “walk before me” signifies a life lived in the presence of God. It implies an ongoing relationship and a commitment to live according to God’s ways. Solomon is reminded to follow in the footsteps of his father, David, who was known for his devotion to God.

Integrity of heart and uprightness:God desires His people to have integrity and uprightness in their hearts. Integrity means being honest, sincere, and consistent in our actions, while uprightness refers to righteousness and moral correctness. God values inner purity and honesty as He looks at the heart rather than outward appearances.

Obedience to God’s commands:Solomon is instructed to do “according to all that I have commanded thee.” This emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commandments, which are found in the law given to Moses. Obedience to God’s commands is a demonstration of love and reverence towards Him.

Keeping God’s statutes and judgments:In addition to obedience, Solomon is urged to “keep my statutes and my judgments.” Statutes and judgments refer to God’s laws and regulations for His people. It encompasses both moral and civil laws that govern various aspects of life. Keeping God’s statutes involves a commitment to living according to His standards.

Lessons from 1 Kings 9:4:

  • Walking with integrity and uprightness:As believers, we should strive to walk before God with integrity and uprightness. Our actions and attitudes should align with God’s principles of righteousness, both in public and private.
  • Obedience and submission:God expects obedience and submission to His commands. We demonstrate our love for God by obeying His Word and seeking to align our lives with His will.
  • Importance of keeping God’s statutes:God’s laws and regulations are not meant to restrict us but to guide us in righteous living. Keeping His statutes ensures that we are in harmony with His plan and purpose for our lives.
  • Reflecting on David’s example:David’s life was marked by a deep love for God and a genuine desire to follow Him. We can learn from David’s devotion and seek to emulate his faithfulness to God.

Overall, 1 Kings 9:4 serves as a reminder to Solomon and to us that a life lived in integrity, obedience to God’s commands, and adherence to His statutes brings blessing and favour from the Lord.
