1 Kings Chapter 19

Summery

In 1 Kings 19, we find the prophet Elijah fleeing from Queen Jezebel, who threatened his life after he defeated the prophets of Baal. Exhausted and discouraged, Elijah seeks refuge in the wilderness and prays for death. However, an angel appears to him, providing food and water, encouraging him to regain his strength. Strengthened by this divine intervention, Elijah journeys for forty days and nights to Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.

At the mountain, Elijah finds a cave to dwell in. God speaks to him, asking why he is there. Elijah expresses his despair, feeling like the only faithful servant left in Israel. God instructs Elijah to stand on the mountain, where he experiences a mighty wind, an earthquake, and a fire. Yet, God is not present in any of these phenomena. Instead, Elijah encounters a gentle whisper—a still, small voice.

Realizing the significance of this whisper, Elijah covers his face and approaches the entrance of the cave. God reaffirms His presence, assuring Elijah that there are still 7,000 faithful Israelites who have not worshipped false gods. God directs Elijah to anoint Hazael as king of Aram, Jehu as king of Israel, and Elisha as his successor.
