1 Samuel 1:11

Listen to this article

“And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.”

Historical Context:1 Samuel 1 is the beginning of the story of Samuel, one of the prominent figures in the Old Testament. Hannah, Samuel’s mother, was married to Elkanah, but she was barren and deeply distressed about her inability to have children. The passage captures Hannah’s heartfelt prayer at the tabernacle in Shiloh, where she fervently seeks God’s intervention.

The Vow:Hannah makes a vow to God in her prayer. Vows were solemn promises made to God, expressing a commitment or dedication to a particular action. In her vow, Hannah promises that if God grants her a son, she will give him back to the Lord for all the days of his life. She declares that no razor shall come upon his head, indicating that he would be set apart as a Nazirite, consecrated to God.

Hannah’s Faith:Hannah’s vow demonstrates her deep faith and trust in God. Despite her personal anguish, she turns to the Lord in prayer and places her hope in His mercy and power. She acknowledges God’s authority as the Lord of hosts, recognizing His sovereignty and ability to intervene in her life. Hannah’s prayer reflects her surrender to God’s will and her willingness to give back to Him that which is most precious to her.

God’s Response:God hears and answers Hannah’s prayer. In the subsequent verses, Eli the priest blesses her and prophesies that God will grant her request. In due time, Hannah conceives and gives birth to a son, Samuel, as God had promised.

Lessons and Application:

  • Hannah’s example teaches us the importance of taking our concerns and burdens to the Lord in prayer. Regardless of our circumstances, we can pour out our hearts before Him, knowing that He is attentive and compassionate.
  • Hannah’s vow also illustrates the principle of surrendering our desires and plans to God. She was willing to give back the child she longed for, recognizing that he ultimately belonged to the Lord. We should cultivate a similar attitude of surrender, offering our lives and possessions for God’s purposes.
  • Hannah’s story highlights God’s faithfulness in answering prayers. He is the God who hears and responds to the cries of His people. We can trust in His perfect timing and rely on His promises.
