1 Samuel 10:1

Posted on 26 June 2025
Listen to this article

“Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel records the transition of leadership from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. In chapter 10, Samuel is directed by God to anoint Saul as the first king of Israel. This verse describes the anointing of Saul and highlights God’s choice of him as captain over His inheritance.

The anointing:Anointing with oil was a symbolic act in ancient Israel, signifying God’s chosen person for a specific role or task. In this case, Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it on Saul’s head. This act represented the empowerment and consecration of Saul as the leader of God’s people. The anointing was a visible sign of God’s favour and the bestowal of His Spirit upon Saul.

God’s choice:Samuel’s statement, “Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee,” emphasizes that Saul’s appointment as king was not a human decision but a divine choice. God had selected Saul to be the leader over His inheritance, referring to the people of Israel whom God considered His own possession. This verse highlights God’s sovereignty in selecting and raising up leaders according to His purposes.

Leadership and responsibility:Saul’s anointing as captain over God’s inheritance carried a significant responsibility. As king, he was entrusted with the task of leading and protecting God’s people, guiding them in accordance with God’s will. This verse reminds us that leadership, particularly in the context of God’s people, should be viewed as a sacred duty, requiring a commitment to God’s purposes and the welfare of His people.

Application:While this verse specifically addresses Saul’s anointing as king, there are broader principles we can draw from it. As believers, we are also anointed with the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:20, 27), signifying our calling and empowerment to serve God’s purposes. We should recognize that our leadership, whether in a formal position or in our daily lives, should be grounded in God’s guidance, seeking His will and working for the well-being of His people.

In summary, 1 Samuel 10:1 showcases Saul’s anointing as captain over God’s inheritance, emphasizing that his selection as king was God’s choice. This verse reminds us of the significance of leadership and the responsibility it carries. As followers of God, we can apply the principles of seeking His guidance and serving His people in our own lives.
