Listen to this article

"And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together."

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, let’s establish the context of 1 Samuel. Saul, the first king of Israel, had been anointed by Samuel. In this chapter, Nahash the Ammonite threatened the city of Jabesh-gilead and its inhabitants. The people of Jabesh-gilead requested help from Saul, and he responded by gathering an army.

Analyzing the verse:

  • Organized strategy:Saul divided his army into three companies, demonstrating wise military tactics. This strategy allowed them to surround and attack the Ammonite host effectively.
  • God’s guidance:Though the verse doesn’t explicitly mention God’s involvement, it’s important to note that Saul was appointed by God as king (1 Samuel 9:17) and anointed by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1). Therefore, it can be understood that God guided Saul and his actions.
  • Victory and scattering:Saul’s forces successfully defeated the Ammonites, causing them to scatter and preventing them from regrouping. This victory ensured the safety of Jabesh-gilead and secured Saul’s reputation as a capable leader.

Themes and lessons:

  • Divine guidance:This verse highlights the role of divine guidance in Saul’s military success. It reminds us that God can lead and empower individuals to accomplish His purposes.
  • Effective leadership:Saul’s division of the army into three companies demonstrates good leadership and strategic planning. It reminds us of the importance of organization and wisdom in handling challenging situations.
  • God’s faithfulness:The victory over the Ammonites is evidence of God’s faithfulness to His people. He provided for Israel’s defence and protected them from their enemies, just as He had promised.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s guidance:Like Saul, we should seek God’s guidance in our decision-making processes. Trusting in His leading can help us make wise choices and achieve success in our endeavours.
  • Develop leadership skills:Saul’s effective leadership in this situation serves as an example for us. We can strive to develop our leadership abilities, learning from biblical accounts and seeking wisdom in leading others.
  • Recognise God’s faithfulness:Reflecting on God’s faithfulness in the past can strengthen our faith and trust in Him. We should remember that He is faithful to fulfil His promises and protect His people.

Remember to read the entire chapter of 1 Samuel 11 to gain a comprehensive understanding of the narrative. Bible study is enriched by considering the broader context and related passages as well.
