Listen to this article

“And all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.”

Background: The book of 1 Samuel is part of the Old Testament and provides historical accounts of the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. It covers the transition from the period of the judges to the reign of King Saul.

Saul’s Kingship: This verse describes the significant event of Saul being publicly recognized as the king of Israel. After leading a successful military campaign against the Ammonites and delivering the city of Jabesh‑gilead, Saul’s leadership and bravery were evident to the people. As a result, they gathered at Gilgal, a significant location in Israel’s history, to acknowledge Saul as their king.

The Role of Gilgal: Gilgal holds great importance in the Old Testament. It was the place where the Israelites first camped after crossing the Jordan River into the Promised Land (Joshua 4:19). Gilgal was also where Joshua circumcised the new generation of Israelites (Joshua 5:2‑9). It became a central location for various events in Israel’s history, including the renewal of the covenant with God (Joshua 8:30‑35) and the anointing of Saul as king (1 Samuel 10:8).

Sacrifices of Peace Offerings: In Gilgal, the people made sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord. Peace offerings were a type of sacrifice in which the worshiper offered an animal as an expression of thanksgiving, fellowship, and devotion to God. The offering symbolized reconciliation and a peaceful relationship with God and others.

Rejoicing and Unity: The verse concludes by stating that Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. This celebration marked a significant moment in the history of Israel, as they welcomed Saul as their king. The unity and joy expressed by the people indicated their acceptance of Saul’s leadership and their hope for a prosperous future under his reign.
