“And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days’ respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.”
Historical Context:The book of 1 Samuel records the transition of Israel from a period of judges to a monarchy. During this time, the Philistines were a constant threat to the Israelites. In 1 Samuel 11, Nahash the Ammonite came against Jabesh-gilead, a city on the eastern side of the Jordan River.
Desperate Situation:Nahash and his army besieged Jabesh-gilead, intending to conquer and humiliate its inhabitants. The elders of the city recognised their need for help and approached Saul, the newly anointed king of Israel, seeking assistance.
Seeking Deliverance:The elders of Jabesh-gilead requested seven days’ respite, during which they would send messengers to rally support from all the coasts of Israel. Their plan was to find someone who would come and save them from the impending threat of Nahash.
Trusting God’s Provision:Although the people of Jabesh-gilead recognised their vulnerability and dire situation, they exhibited faith by reaching out for help. They understood that their ultimate hope and deliverance would come from the Lord, who had intervened in Israel’s history in the past.
Reflection on Application:This passage teaches us several valuable lessons:
- Seeking Help:The people of Jabesh-gilead were not ashamed to seek help in their time of need. It is important for us to recognise when we require assistance and to humbly reach out to others for support, guidance, or prayer.
- Trusting God’s Timing:Jabesh-gilead requested a specific time frame of seven days. Likewise, we must learn to patiently wait on God’s timing for His deliverance and guidance in our lives.
- Faith in God’s Provision:The people of Jabesh-gilead trusted that God would provide a deliverer for them. We should also place our trust in God’s provision and be confident that He will come to our aid in times of trouble.
- Unity and Community:The plea for help was not made individually but by the elders of the city on behalf of the entire community. This highlights the importance of unity and seeking support from our fellow believers during challenging times.
As we study this passage, we can be encouraged to approach God in prayer and seek the help of others when we face difficulties, knowing that our ultimate reliance is on God, who is our ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
