Listen to this article

"For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people."

1 Samuel 12:22 is part of a significant moment in Israel’s history when Samuel, the last of the judges and the prophet of God, was addressing the Israelites after they requested a king to rule over them. In this verse, Samuel assures the people of God’s faithfulness and emphasizes the reasons why He will not abandon them.

God’s faithfulness:Samuel begins by reassuring the Israelites that the Lord will not forsake His people. Throughout the Old Testament, we see numerous instances of God’s faithfulness to His covenant with the Israelites. He chose them as His people and made promises to be with them, guide them, and bless them. Despite their shortcomings, God remains faithful and steadfast in His love and commitment to His chosen ones.

God’s great name’s sake:Samuel highlights that God’s commitment to His people is not only based on their actions or worthiness but also for the sake of His great name. God’s reputation and character are intertwined with the well-being and faithfulness of His people. He desires to maintain His honour and integrity by upholding His promises and protecting those who belong to Him.

God’s pleasure in His people:Samuel further explains that it pleases the Lord to make the Israelites His people. God’s choice to establish a covenant relationship with them was not due to any inherent greatness or merit on their part. Instead, it was an expression of God’s grace and His desire to demonstrate His love and faithfulness. God delights in having a people whom He can call His own and shower with His blessings.

This verse serves as a reminder of God’s enduring faithfulness to His people, both in the context of ancient Israel and for believers today. It emphasizes that God’s commitment to us is rooted in His character, not in our performance. Regardless of our failures or shortcomings, God remains steadfast and faithful, always working for our good and His glory.

As we reflect on 1 Samuel 12:22, let us find comfort and assurance in the knowledge that God will never forsake His people, and He takes pleasure in establishing a relationship with us through His grace and love.
