1 Samuel 13:21

Listen to this article

“Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.”

Context:This verse is a part of the narrative that describes the difficult circumstances the Israelites faced during the time of King Saul.

The context of this verse takes place shortly after Saul’s appointment as king over Israel.

The Philistines, one of the neighbouring nations, had gathered a large army to confront the Israelites, causing fear and panic among the Israelite warriors.

In the preceding verses, it is mentioned that the Israelites did not have sufficient weapons and had to rely on the Philistines for blacksmithing services to sharpen their agricultural tools.

Consequently, there was a scarcity of iron weapons among the Israelites.

The verse specifically mentions different tools that required sharpening, such as mattocks, coulters, forks, axes, and goads.

These tools were primarily used for farming, indicating that the Israelites lacked proper weaponry for battle.

This verse highlights the disadvantage and vulnerability of the Israelites in the face of their enemies.

It emphasises the Philistines’ dominance over the Israelites and their control over essential resources such as iron.

The scarcity of iron weapons weakened the Israelites’ ability to defend themselves effectively and intensified the threat posed by the Philistine army.

From a broader perspective, this verse serves as a reminder of the consequences Israel faced due to their disobedience to God.

In the previous chapter, Saul had acted in disobedience by offering a sacrifice himself instead of waiting for the prophet Samuel, who had been instructed by God to perform the ritual.

As a result of his disobedience, God rejected Saul as king, and Samuel declared that his kingdom would not endure.

The scarcity of weapons and the reliance on the Philistines can be seen as a consequence of Saul’s actions and a reflection of the Israelites’ faithlessness.
