1 Samuel 13:7

Posted on 4 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel is part of the Old Testament and focuses on the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of a monarchy in Israel. The verse in question is set during the reign of Saul, the first king of Israel. The Philistines were a significant threat to Israel at this time.

Geographic Setting:The verse mentions that some Hebrews crossed the Jordan River to the land of Gad and Gilead. These territories were located east of the Jordan River, while Saul and the rest of the Israelite people were in Gilgal, situated in the central part of the land of Canaan.

Saul’s Location:The verse states that Saul was in Gilgal. Gilgal was an important location during Saul’s reign as it served as a base for him and his army. It was also a place where important events, such as circumcision of the Israelites after crossing the Jordan River (Joshua 5:9), took place.

Fearful Followers:The verse concludes by stating that the people were following Saul but trembling. This indicates that there was a sense of fear or anxiety among the Israelites. The presence of the Philistines and the uncertain circumstances may have contributed to this fear. It highlights the challenging situation Saul faced and the pressure he was under as the leader of the people.

Application:One possible lesson we can draw from this verse is the importance of trusting in God’s strength and guidance even in times of fear and uncertainty. Saul’s followers were trembling, but it is crucial to remember that faith and trust in God can help overcome fear. As Christians, we are encouraged to trust in God’s providence and seek His wisdom in all situations.

Additionally, we can learn from Saul’s experience that leadership comes with challenges. Saul was faced with a difficult situation, and his response and actions in the subsequent verses provide valuable lessons on obedience, patience, and relying on God’s timing.

It is worth noting that this verse is just a small part of a larger narrative in the book of 1 Samuel. Exploring the surrounding verses and chapters will provide further insights into the events and lessons of Saul’s reign and the overall historical context.
