1 Samuel 13:8

Posted on 4 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that narrates an incident involving King Saul of Israel. Let’s examine the Context:At this point in Israel’s history, Saul was the first king anointed by God, chosen to rule over the Israelites. Samuel, the prophet and judge, played a crucial role in anointing and guiding Saul. In the preceding chapters, Samuel had instructed Saul to gather the Israelite army at Gilgal, where he would offer sacrifices and receive further instructions from God before going into battle against the Philistines.

Verse Analysis:Waiting for Samuel: The verse begins by stating that Saul tarried or waited for seven days, as Samuel had instructed him. This waiting period was significant because it demonstrated Saul’s obedience and his recognition of Samuel’s authority as God’s appointed prophet.

Samuel’s Delay:However, Samuel did not arrive at Gilgal within the expected timeframe. Samuel’s absence may have caused confusion and uncertainty among the people, particularly Saul, who was anticipating his arrival. It is unclear why Samuel was delayed, but this situation created a crucial test for Saul’s faith and patience.

Scattering of the People:As Samuel’s arrival was delayed, the people grew restless and began to scatter. The Hebrew word used here implies a sense of fear or disarray. The absence of strong leadership and the uncertainty surrounding Samuel’s delay led to a loss of confidence and resulted in people dispersing and going their own ways.

Key Themes and Lessons:

  • Obedience and Trust:Saul’s obedience to Samuel’s instructions in waiting for seven days demonstrates the importance of obeying God’s appointed authorities and trusting in His timing. Saul initially exhibited trust and followed Samuel’s guidance, but his faith would soon be tested.
  • Testing of Faith:Samuel’s delay presented Saul with a test of his faith and patience. It is during such challenging moments that our faith is tested and refined. Waiting for God’s timing can be difficult, but it is crucial to remain faithful and trust that God will fulfill His promises.
  • The Impact of Leadership:The scattering of the people highlights the significance of strong and dependable leadership. Samuel’s absence left a leadership vacuum, resulting in the dispersion of the Israelite army. This underscores the importance of reliable leadership in maintaining unity and focus within a community.
  • Consequences of Impatience:Saul’s impatience and failure to wait for Samuel’s arrival would have significant consequences in the following verses. It ultimately led to Saul taking matters into his own hands by offering the sacrifices himself, an act that went against God’s command and displeased Him.

Overall, 1 Samuel 13:8 emphasizes the importance of obedience, trust, and patience in the face of delays and uncertainty. It serves as a reminder that God’s timing is perfect and that we should remain steadfast in our faith even when circumstances are challenging. Additionally, it highlights the role of strong leadership in maintaining unity and order among God’s people.
