1 Samuel 15:14

Listen to this article

“And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”

This verse is part of the account of Saul’s disobedience to God’s command. Let’s explore the context and the lessons we can learn from this passage.

Context:1 Samuel 15 records the events that unfolded after Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel. God gave him specific instructions through the prophet Samuel regarding the Amalekites, a wicked and hostile nation. God commanded Saul to utterly destroy everything that belonged to the Amalekites, sparing nothing, including the people, animals, and possessions. However, when Saul went to wage war against the Amalekites, he did not fully obey God’s instructions. While Saul did attack the Amalekites and defeat them, he spared Agag, the king of the Amalekites, and he also spared the best of the livestock. In verse 14, Samuel confronts Saul about his disobedience, questioning him about the sound of the animals he can hear.

From this verse, we can draw several important lessons:

  • Obedience to God’s commands is crucial:Saul’s disobedience to God’s specific instructions resulted in severe consequences. It is a reminder that God expects complete obedience from His people. Partial obedience is not acceptable in His sight.
  • Rationalising disobedience is not justified:Saul attempted to rationalise his disobedience by claiming that he spared the best of the livestock to offer sacrifices to God. However, God values obedience over sacrifices (1 Samuel 15:22). We should not seek to justify our disobedience or compromise our obedience to God’s Word.
  • God sees and knows our actions:Samuel’s question, “What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” serves as a reminder that God is fully aware of our actions and intentions. We cannot hide our disobedience or deceive God. He knows the thoughts and intents of our hearts (Hebrews 4:13).
  • The importance of repentance:Saul’s response to Samuel’s question reveals his lack of genuine remorse. Instead of acknowledging his sin and seeking forgiveness, he tried to shift the blame. However, true repentance involves acknowledging our wrongdoing, taking responsibility, and turning back to God. It is crucial to have a repentant heart when confronted with our disobedience.

In summary, 1 Samuel 15:14 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands, the futility of rationalising disobedience, God’s omniscience, and the necessity of genuine repentance. These lessons remain relevant to us today as we strive to live according to God’s will and follow His Word.
