1 Samuel 15:2

Listen to this article

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.”

Historical Context:1 Samuel is a book in the Old Testament that recounts the transition of Israel from a loose confederation of tribes to a monarchy. This particular verse is part of Samuel’s instructions to King Saul concerning God’s command to destroy the Amalekites completely. The Amalekites were a nomadic tribe descended from Esau and were known for their aggression towards Israel.

God’s Command:In this verse, God commands Saul to remember what the Amalekites did to Israel. The specific incident being referenced here is the attack on the Israelites as they journeyed from Egypt to the Promised Land. The Amalekites ambushed the Israelites, targeting the weak and weary at the rear of the group (Exodus 17:8-13). God, therefore, issues a directive to Saul to bring justice upon the Amalekites for their hostility towards His people.

Divine Retribution:God’s command is a response to the Amalekites’ aggression and reflects His divine justice. It is important to note that God’s command to destroy the Amalekites is not to be understood as a blanket endorsement for genocide. Rather, it is a specific judgment against a particular group for their unprovoked hostility towards Israel.

Saul’s Partial Obedience:Following God’s command, Saul mobilised an army to attack the Amalekites. However, Saul did not fully obey God’s instructions. In subsequent verses (1 Samuel 15:3-9), Saul spared the Amalekite king, Agag, and the best of the livestock. Saul’s disobedience leads to his rejection as king by God and the subsequent rise of David as his successor (1 Samuel 15:10-35).

Lessons and Applications:

  • Obedience to God:Saul’s partial obedience teaches us the importance of fully obeying God’s commands. God expects us to obey His instructions completely and not pick and choose what suits us. Partial obedience is disobedience.
  • Consequences of Disobedience:Saul’s failure to carry out God’s command resulted in severe consequences for him personally and for his kingship. This serves as a reminder that our disobedience to God’s commands can have lasting effects on our lives.
  • God’s Justice and Judgment:The Amalekites’ actions were not overlooked by God. It shows that God is just and holds accountable those who perpetrate evil. While we may not always witness immediate consequences, God will ultimately bring justice.

Overall, 1 Samuel 15:2 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the consequences that can arise from disobedience. It also highlights God’s justice and His commitment to defending His people against their enemies.
