1 Samuel 15:6

Listen to this article

“And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.”

This verse is part of the narrative that recounts Saul’s encounter with the Amalekites and his subsequent disobedience to God’s command. To gain a better understanding of this verse, let’s explore the context and the key themes within the passage.

Context:1 Samuel 15 describes a pivotal event in Saul’s reign as king of Israel. God had given Saul a clear command through the prophet Samuel to utterly destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions as a judgment for their past wickedness against the Israelites (1 Samuel 15:2-3). In response, Saul assembled an army and went to wage war against the Amalekites.

Key Themes:

  • Divine Command and Obedience:The primary theme in this passage is the importance of obeying God’s commands. God had specifically instructed Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites, leaving no survivors or possessions. However, Saul chose to spare the king of the Amalekites, Agag, and also spared the best of the livestock and other valuable possessions (1 Samuel 15:8-9). Saul’s disobedience to God’s command led to severe consequences.
  • Gratitude and Kindness:In verse 6, Saul addresses the Kenites, a people who had previously shown kindness to the Israelites during their journey from Egypt. Saul acknowledges their kindness and instructs them to separate themselves from the Amalekites, so they would not suffer the consequences of God’s judgment upon them. This verse highlights the importance of gratitude and acknowledging acts of kindness shown to God’s people.
  • Divine Judgment:The passage emphasises God’s judgment upon the Amalekites for their past wickedness. God used Saul and the Israelites as instruments of His judgment against this nation. It reveals the seriousness of sin and the consequences that can follow disobedience to God’s commands.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Obedience to God’s commands:This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying God without compromise. Saul’s failure to fully obey God’s command resulted in his loss of kingship and favour from God (1 Samuel 15:23). It encourages us to carefully follow and obey God’s instructions, knowing that obedience is an expression of our love for Him.
  • Gratitude and kindness:Saul’s acknowledgement of the Kenites’ kindness highlights the significance of expressing gratitude for acts of kindness shown to us. It reminds us to be thankful for the kindness we receive and encourages us to extend kindness to others.
  • The seriousness of sin:The judgment upon the Amalekites reveals the seriousness of sin and its consequences. It reminds us to take sin seriously and to strive for repentance and righteousness in our lives, understanding that God’s judgment is just and righteous.

In summary, 1 Samuel 15:6 underscores the importance of obedience to God’s commands, highlights the significance of gratitude and kindness, and emphasises the seriousness of sin and God’s righteous judgment.
