1 Samuel 16:21

Listen to this article

“And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative in 1 Samuel where Samuel the prophet anoints David to be the future king of Israel. At this point, Saul, the first king of Israel, has been troubled by an evil spirit from the Lord. Saul’s servants recommend finding someone who can play skillfully on the harp to soothe the king. David, who was a young shepherd boy and a skilful musician, is brought before Saul.

Divine Appointment:This verse emphasises the divine appointment and providence of God. God had chosen David to be anointed as the future king of Israel. Although David might not have expected to become Saul’s armourbearer, it was part of God’s plan for him to enter the service of the king.

David’s Character:David’s character shines through in this verse. Even though he had been anointed by Samuel as the future king, David did not let pride or arrogance interfere with his willingness to serve. He humbly accepts the position of armourbearer to Saul, demonstrating his faithfulness and humility.

Saul’s Favour and Love:The verse highlights Saul’s immediate affection for David. Saul loved David greatly, which suggests that David’s music and character had a profound impact on him. David’s skilful playing on the harp, combined with his genuine heart, touched Saul’s soul and brought him comfort.

The Role of an Armorbearer:In ancient times, an armorbearer was a trusted servant and companion who carried the king’s armour, weapons, and assisted in battle. By becoming Saul’s armourbearer, David entered into a close relationship with the king and was entrusted with important responsibilities.

Lessons for Us:This verse encourages us to be faithful in the tasks and positions God has given us, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may appear. David’s faithfulness and dedication in serving Saul prepared him for future leadership. It also reminds us of the importance of using our skills and talents to bless others and bring comfort and encouragement to those in need.

  • Recognise God’s providence in your life. Trust that He has a plan and purpose for you, even if it doesn’t align with your expectations.
  • Cultivate a heart of humility and willingness to serve others. Look for opportunities to serve in whatever capacity you can, no matter how small.
  • Use your skills and talents to bring joy and comfort to others. Just as David’s music brought solace to Saul, our abilities can be a source of blessing to those around us.
  • Seek to build genuine relationships with others, showing love, care, and support.

Note: Remember that studying the Bible involves examining the context, considering different interpretations, and seeking guidance from reliable biblical resources and teachers to gain a comprehensive understanding.
