Posted on 26 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel is primarily focused on the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. At this point in the narrative, David has gained prominence for his victory over Goliath, and his loyal service to King Saul. This verse highlights the deep friendship between David and Jonathan, Saul’s son.

A unique bond:The verse begins by stating that after David finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan’s soul was “knit” or deeply connected with David’s soul. This suggests a powerful and profound friendship between the two individuals.

Love and devotion:The verse goes on to say that Jonathan loved David as his own soul. This indicates a love that surpassed mere friendship and suggests a deep devotion and affection Jonathan had for David. Their bond went beyond the surface level and extended to a heartfelt connection.

Jonathan’s character:Jonathan’s love for David is significant because Jonathan was the heir to the throne. Despite David’s rising popularity and potential threat to Jonathan’s future position, Jonathan embraced David and supported him. This demonstrates Jonathan’s selflessness, loyalty, and genuine love for David.

Lessons on friendship:The friendship between Jonathan and David serves as a model of true and selfless friendship. It teaches us the value of loyalty, support, and love for one another, even in challenging circumstances. Their relationship was not driven by personal gain or ambition but by a genuine care and concern for each other.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating healthy friendships based on love, loyalty, and support. It encourages us to prioritise selflessness over selfishness and to be genuine in our relationships. We should strive to be faithful friends who are willing to stand by one another, even in difficult times.

In summary, 1 Samuel 18:1 portrays the deep friendship and love between Jonathan and David. Their relationship serves as an example of selfless friendship and teaches us valuable lessons about loyalty and support.
