1 Samuel 18:12

Listen to this article

“And Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him and was departed from Saul.”

This verse comes from the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, which tells the story of the rise of David, who would later become the renowned King of Israel. In this particular verse, we gain insight into the dynamics between Saul, the reigning king at the time, and David, who had gained favour with both God and the people of Israel.

Context:Prior to 1 Samuel 18:12, David had gained fame for his victory over the Philistine giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17). Saul, who initially welcomed David into his service, had observed his success on the battlefield and had given him a high position in the army. However, as David continued to achieve more triumphs, Saul’s insecurity and fear began to grow.

Saul’s fear:The verse states that Saul was afraid of David. Saul’s fear stemmed from the knowledge that the Lord was with David. Earlier in the narrative, God’s Spirit had departed from Saul due to his disobedience and rebellion (1 Samuel 16:14). This departure of God’s favour from Saul led to his increasing fear and jealousy towards David.

God’s presence:The verse highlights that the Lord was with David. This indicates that David enjoyed a close and intimate relationship with God. David’s righteousness, faithfulness, and reliance on the Lord made him a recipient of God’s favour and blessings. This divine presence with David made Saul’s fear intensify, as he recognised the divine anointing and favour upon David’s life.

The contrast between Saul and David:The verse juxtaposes the departure of God’s presence from Saul with His presence being with David. This contrast emphasises the spiritual state of both individuals. Saul’s disobedience and waywardness caused him to lose God’s favour, while David’s obedience and trust in God resulted in divine blessing.

Lessons for us:This passage teaches us several valuable lessons. It reminds us of the importance of maintaining a close relationship with God, seeking His guidance, and living in obedience to His commands. It also highlights the destructive nature of jealousy, fear, and insecurity. Saul’s fear of David ultimately led to his downfall and a strained relationship with God.

Additionally, this verse foreshadows David’s future as the anointed king of Israel. Despite Saul’s attempts to harm David, God’s plans for David’s life could not be thwarted. It serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His faithfulness to fulfil His purposes.

In summary, 1 Samuel 18:12 sheds light on the growing fear of Saul towards David due to the Lord’s presence being with David and departed from Saul. This verse reveals the consequences of Saul’s disobedience and highlights the importance of a close relationship with God. It also foreshadows David’s future as the chosen king of Israel.
