1 Samuel 18:18

Posted on 26 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s important to consider the context. In earlier chapters of 1 Samuel, David gained recognition and favour from Saul after defeating the giant Philistine warrior Goliath. David’s reputation as a skilled warrior and his growing popularity among the people caused King Saul to feel threatened, leading to tension between them. Despite this, Jonathan, Saul’s son, developed a deep friendship with David.

Humility and Recognition:In this verse, David expresses his humility and amazement at the prospect of becoming the son-in-law of the king. He acknowledges his humble background, questioning why he, a member of a lesser-known family, should have such an honour. David’s response highlights his humility and modesty, showing that he did not seek power or status for himself but was content with his current position.

Divine Providence:David’s question can also be seen as acknowledging the hand of God in his life. He recognises that his future role as the son-in-law of the king is not something he could have achieved on his own but is a result of God’s providence and favour. It reflects David’s understanding that his destiny was shaped by God’s plan for him.

Lessons for us:David’s humble response can serve as an example for us today. It reminds us of the importance of recognising our own limitations and acknowledging that any accomplishments or positions of influence we may have are ultimately gifts from God. It encourages us to approach our achievements with humility and to be grateful for the opportunities that come our way.

Trusting God’s Plan:David’s question also reveals his trust in God’s plan. Despite the challenges he faced with Saul’s jealousy and animosity, David remained faithful and relied on God’s guidance. This verse serves as a reminder for us to trust in God’s providence and to have confidence that He is at work in our lives, even when circumstances seem uncertain or unfavourable.

Overall, 1 Samuel 18:18 offers valuable insights into David’s humility, trust in God, and recognition of divine providence. It encourages us to approach our achievements with humility, trust in God’s plan for our lives, and be grateful for the opportunities He provides.
