1 Samuel 18:20

“And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.”

Background: The book of 1 Samuel records the transition of Israel from a period of judges to the establishment of kingship. Saul was the first king of Israel, anointed by the prophet Samuel. In 1 Samuel 18, we see the rise of David, who becomes a central figure in the narrative.

Michal’s Love for David: Michal, the youngest daughter of Saul, had developed a deep love for David. Earlier in 1 Samuel 18, we read about David’s military victories and his growing popularity among the people, which led to Saul’s jealousy and attempts to kill David. However, Michal’s love for David was genuine and sincere, and it played a significant role in the events that followed.

Saul’s Reaction: The verse states that when Saul heard about Michal’s love for David, it pleased him. This seems surprising considering Saul’s previous attempts to harm David. Some scholars suggest that Saul saw this as an opportunity to use Michal’s affection to manipulate and control David, thereby keeping him close and under his influence.

Political Motives: Saul may have also been motivated by political considerations. David’s popularity and military success made him a potential threat to Saul’s kingship. By allowing David to marry Michal, Saul may have sought to strengthen his own position by aligning himself with David’s rising fame and securing a loyal alliance.

Fulfillment of a Promise: In 1 Samuel 17:25, Saul had promised that whoever defeated Goliath, the Philistine champion, would be rewarded with great riches and his daughter’s hand in marriage. David had accomplished this feat, and now Saul had the opportunity to fulfill his promise.
