Listen to this article

“And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel focuses on the life of David, who was anointed by God to be the future king of Israel. In this particular verse, we see the deep friendship between Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and David. Jonathan recognises David’s valour and the favour of God upon him.

Symbolism of the Robe:Jonathan gives David his robe, garments, sword, bow, and girdle. The act of giving his robe symbolises Jonathan’s willingness to relinquish his position as the heir to the throne and to honour David as the chosen one. The robe represents authority, and by giving it to David, Jonathan is acknowledging and affirming God’s plan for David’s future kingship.

Sacrifice and Selflessness:Jonathan’s actions demonstrate his selflessness and loyalty to David. He willingly sets aside his own ambitions and shows a genuine desire for David’s success. This act of sacrifice is a testament to the deep friendship and love between the two men.

Trust in God’s Sovereignty:Jonathan’s actions are indicative of his trust in God’s sovereignty and his recognition of David as the anointed one. He understands that it is God who establishes kings and that David has been chosen by God for this role. Jonathan’s surrendering of his position to David shows his submission to God’s will.

Lessons for us:

  • Friendship and Support:Jonathan’s friendship with David teaches us the importance of genuine friendship and support. It encourages us to be selfless, celebrate the success of others, and help them fulfill their God-given purposes.
  • Trusting God’s Plan:Jonathan’s trust in God’s plan reminds us to submit ourselves to God’s will and trust in His sovereignty. Even when our plans or desires may be different, we should align ourselves with God’s purposes and seek His glory above our own.
  • Sacrifice and Humility:Jonathan’s act of giving his robe represents sacrifice and humility. It teaches us the value of selflessness and the willingness to serve others, even if it means setting aside our own ambitions or positions.

In summary, 1 Samuel 18:4 showcases Jonathan’s deep friendship with David, his selflessness, and his trust in God’s plan. It reminds us of the importance of genuine friendship, trust in God’s sovereignty, and the value of sacrifice and humility in our relationships with others.
