1 Samuel 18:6

Posted on 26 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.”

Context:This verse occurs in the Old Testament and is part of the narrative about David’s rise to prominence in Israel. After David’s victory over the Philistine giant Goliath, his reputation and fame spread throughout the land. Saul, the king of Israel, welcomed David into his service, and this verse describes the scene when David returned from the battle.

Key Points:

  • David’s Victorious Return:1 Samuel 18:6 marks David’s return to the city after his successful battle against Goliath. This victory was a turning point in David’s life, as it catapulted him into the public eye and earned him great acclaim among the people of Israel.
  • The Response of the Women:The women of Israel played a significant role in celebrating David’s triumph. They came out from all cities, singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments, particularly “tabrets,” which were small hand drums or tambourines. Their purpose was to express joy and honor David for his valor.
  • Saul’s Encounter:The verse mentions that the women came to meet King Saul as well. It is likely that Saul initially received the praise and adoration from the people as their king, but with David’s victory, the focus of the celebration shifted to the young warrior. This may have created some jealousy and insecurity within Saul, as he saw David gaining popularity and attention.
  • Foreshadowing David’s Future:This scene foreshadows the complex relationship between David and Saul that develops in subsequent chapters. David’s rising popularity becomes a point of tension, leading to Saul’s envy and attempts to harm David. The event described in this verse sets the stage for the conflict and challenges David will face as he emerges as a central figure in Israel’s history.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God’s Anointed:David’s victory and subsequent recognition serve as a reminder of how God can elevate and bless individuals according to His purpose. God had chosen David to be the future king of Israel, and this event marked the beginning of his journey towards fulfilling that calling. It teaches us that God’s plans for our lives may include times of victory, recognition, and honor, but they also come with challenges and trials.
  • Dealing with Jealousy:Saul’s jealousy and insecurity in response to David’s success highlight the importance of addressing and overcoming jealousy in our own lives. Instead of being threatened or envious of the accomplishments of others, we should learn to celebrate their victories and support them. Jealousy can hinder relationships and lead to destructive actions, as seen in Saul’s subsequent actions towards David.
  • Humility and Gratitude:Despite his newfound popularity, David remained humble and grateful throughout his journey. Rather than seeking personal glory, he recognised that his success was ultimately from God. As we achieve our own successes and receive recognition, it’s essential to maintain a humble attitude, acknowledging God’s role in our accomplishments and giving Him thanks.
  • The Power of Celebration:The women’s response to David’s victory demonstrates the power of celebration and communal joy. In our own lives, we should cultivate a spirit of celebration, not only for personal achievements but also for the victories and accomplishments of others. Celebrating together fosters unity, strengthens relationships, and brings glory to God.

Remember, the study of Scripture is enriched by considering the larger context and exploring related passages. Reading further in 1 Samuel provides a deeper understanding of David’s relationship with Saul and the subsequent events that shape David’s journey.
