Listen to this article

“And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.”

Context:First, let’s understand the context of 1 Samuel 19:20. This verse is part of the larger narrative involving King Saul and David. Saul, who was once favoured by God, became jealous of David because of his success and popularity among the people. Saul attempted to kill David on several occasions, forcing David to flee and seek refuge.

The Sending of Messengers:Saul, in his pursuit of David, sent messengers to capture him. Saul was determined to eliminate the threat that David posed to his kingship. This action reveals Saul’s increasing desperation and his disregard for David’s innocence.

Prophesying and Samuel:When the messengers arrived at the company of prophets, they witnessed a scene of prophesying. Samuel, the prophet and judge, was overseeing this group of prophets. The prophets were likely engaged in worship, prayer, and proclaiming God’s message.

The Spirit of God:As the messengers of Saul encountered the company of prophets and Samuel, the Spirit of God came upon them. The Spirit’s presence and power overwhelmed them, causing them to prophesy as well. This miraculous event interrupted their original intent to capture David and redirected their actions toward praising and prophesying about God.

Spiritual Interference:The fact that the Spirit of God came upon Saul’s messengers, causing them to prophesy, serves as a divine intervention. God directly intervened to protect David and hinder Saul’s plan to harm him. This event highlights God’s sovereignty and His ability to frustrate the plans of those who oppose His will.

God’s Protection:Through this supernatural occurrence, God demonstrated His protective care for David. Despite Saul’s relentless pursuit, God made it clear that David was under His divine protection. This incident also reveals the futility of human efforts to harm someone whom God has chosen and anointed for a special purpose.

Lessons for us:The story of 1 Samuel 19:20 teaches us several important lessons. It reminds us that God is sovereign and can intervene in any situation according to His will. It also highlights the importance of trusting in God’s protection and guidance, even in the face of opposition or persecution. Additionally, it serves as a reminder that God can use unexpected means to accomplish His purposes and frustrate the plans of those who oppose Him.

Overall, 1 Samuel 19:20 emphasises God’s protection and intervention in the life of David, showcasing His sovereignty and care for His chosen servant.
