1 Samuel 19:4

Posted on 26 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good.”

Context:Before diving into the verse, it’s important to understand the context. In 1 Samuel 19, we find the story of David and Saul. Saul, the first king of Israel, became jealous of David’s popularity and the favour God showed him. Saul sought to kill David, and Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s close friend, intervened to protect David.

Loyalty and Friendship:Jonathan’s words reveal his loyalty and deep friendship towards David. Despite being the son of the king and Saul’s heir, Jonathan defends David and pleads for his safety. Their friendship is a remarkable example of selfless love and support, which transcended personal ambition and power dynamics.

Standing for What is Right:Jonathan’s actions demonstrate his commitment to doing what is right in the eyes of God. He recognises that David is innocent and has not sinned against Saul. Instead, David’s actions have been beneficial to Saul. Jonathan’s plea is a reminder to Saul that he should not act unjustly or sin against David, an anointed servant of God.

Lessons on Relationship and Advocacy:This verse teaches us valuable lessons about relationships and advocacy. It encourages us to stand up for those who are wrongly accused or mistreated, to speak on their behalf, and to protect them. Jonathan’s intervention not only saves David’s life but also exemplifies the importance of being a loyal and supportive friend.

Trust in God’s Plan:Beyond the immediate context of this verse, the story of David and Saul reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His plan for our lives. Despite Saul’s attempts to harm David, God protected him and eventually made him the next king of Israel. David’s trust in God’s plan and his refusal to take matters into his own hands are evident throughout this narrative.

Application:As we reflect on 1 Samuel 19:4, we can ask ourselves several questions: How can we be loyal and supportive friends like Jonathan? Are we willing to stand up for what is right, even if it means going against those in positions of authority? Do we trust in God’s plan for our lives, even in the face of adversity? We can strive to cultivate friendships built on love, loyalty, and support, and advocate for justice and righteousness in our relationships and society.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and the entire chapter to gain a deeper understanding of the context and the narrative as a whole.
