1 Samuel 2:22

Posted on 5 February 2025
Listen to this article

“Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it is important to provide some context. Eli was the high priest and judge of Israel during a critical time in their history. However, his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were corrupt and engaged in wicked behaviour, which greatly displeased God. This verse highlights their immoral conduct with the women who served at the entrance of the tabernacle.

Eli’s Awareness:The verse starts by stating that Eli, despite being very old, was aware of everything his sons were doing. This implies that Eli had knowledge of their sinful actions, which were causing great harm to the people of Israel. As the high priest and judge, he had a responsibility to address and correct their behaviour but failed to do so effectively.

Disrespecting the Tabernacle:The tabernacle of the congregation was a sacred place where people gathered to worship and seek God’s presence. The fact that Hophni and Phinehas engaged in sinful acts with the women who served at the entrance of the tabernacle showed a complete disregard for the holiness of the place and a lack of reverence for God.

Violation of God’s Law:The behaviour of Eli’s sons was not only immoral but also a violation of God’s law. Sexual immorality and defilement of the holy places were strictly forbidden in the Old Testament. Their actions were an affront to God and demonstrated their lack of respect for His commandments.

Eli’s Failure as a Father and Leader:This verse also highlights Eli’s failure as a father and leader in Israel. He knew about his sons’ sinful actions but did not take decisive action to stop them or correct their behaviour. By allowing their misconduct to continue, he indirectly condoned their actions, contributing to the corruption that plagued Israel during that time.

Consequences:The story of Eli and his sons serves as a warning about the consequences of disobedience and the failure to address sin. As we read further in 1 Samuel, we see that God ultimately pronounced judgement on Eli’s family, leading to their tragic downfall. This emphasises the importance of upholding God’s standards, especially for those in positions of authority and leadership.

In summary, 1 Samuel 2:22 depicts the sinful behaviour of Eli’s sons, their disrespect for the tabernacle, and Eli’s failure to address their actions. It reminds us of the importance of obedience, reverence for God, and the responsibility of leaders to confront sin and uphold God’s standards.
