"Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?"

Meaning and Lessons:Disregard for God’s commands: In this verse, God confronts Eli, the high priest, and his sons, who were also priests. God rebukes them for their disrespectful attitude towards the sacrifices and offerings brought to Him. They were treating the sacrifices lightly and using their positions for personal gain.

  • Divine order: God established the sacrificial system and gave specific instructions for the priests to follow. Eli’s sons disregarded those instructions and treated the offerings with contempt. This was a direct affront to God’s authority and order.

Consequences of disobedience:God’s judgment: In the following verses, God pronounces severe judgment upon Eli’s household. He declares that He will cut off the strength of Eli’s lineage, and his sons would die on the same day. This judgment was a consequence of their disobedience and dishonoring of God.

  • Loss of privilege: The dishonorable actions of Eli’s sons led to the loss of their privileged position as priests. God would raise up a faithful priest in Samuel, who would walk in obedience and honor God’s commands.

Application:We should approach God with reverence and respect, honoring His commands and instructions. Our worship and service should not be taken lightly or used for personal gain.

  • Prioritize God above all else:We should prioritize God and His will above our own desires and pleasures. Putting anything or anyone above God leads to disobedience and dishonoring His name.
  • Consequences of disobedience:Eli’s story serves as a reminder that disobedience to God’s commands carries consequences. It is essential to heed His instructions and live in a manner that pleases Him.

Overall, 1 Samuel 2:29 highlights the importance of honoring God’s commands and priorities, while warning against the consequences of disobedience and disregarding His divine order.
