1 Samuel 2:32

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house forever.”

This verse is part of a prophecy that God gave to Eli, the priest of Shiloh, through a man of God. The prophecy comes as a consequence of the sins committed by Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who were also priests but acted wickedly before the Lord.

“And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation”: God informs Eli that He will raise up an enemy against Israel. The phrase “my habitation” refers to the sanctuary, where God dwells among His people. This enemy will threaten the sanctity and security of the tabernacle and the nation.

“In all the wealth which God shall give Israel”: This enemy will come when Israel is in possession of the wealth and blessings that God has given them. It implies that the enemy will attack during a time of prosperity and abundance.

“And there shall not be an old man in thine house forever”: This part of the prophecy specifically addresses Eli’s descendants. The phrase “old man” can refer to a person with wisdom, experience, and authority. God declares that there will not be an older member from Eli’s lineage serving as a priest in perpetuity.

This prophecy was fulfilled during the time of King Solomon, several generations later, when the priesthood passed from the descendants of Eli to the descendants of Zadok (1 Kings 2:26-27). Eli’s lineage lost the opportunity to serve as priests due to the sins committed by his sons.

This verse highlights the consequences of disobedience and the importance of faithful service to God. It serves as a reminder that God holds His people accountable for their actions, and His judgments are just and unchanging.

Overall, 1 Samuel 2:32 emphasizes the significance of honouring God, obeying His commandments, and upholding the sanctity of His dwelling place. It serves as a cautionary tale and encourages us to live in righteousness and integrity before the Lord.
