1 Samuel 20:18

Posted on 26 September 2025
Listen to this article

“Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative that recounts the deep friendship between Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and David, who would later become the renowned king of Israel. At this point in the story, David is on the run from Saul, who is jealous and seeks to kill him. Jonathan, being aware of his father’s intentions, is assisting David and providing him with information.

1 Samuel 20:1-17 sets the stage for the conversation between Jonathan and David. David is perplexed by Saul’s hostile behavior toward him and seeks an explanation from Jonathan. In verse 3, David says, “And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes, and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.”

Jonathan, who genuinely cares for David, offers to help him determine Saul’s intentions. In 1 Samuel 20:5-17, Jonathan devises a plan to communicate with David secretly, as Saul was unaware of their friendship. In verse 18, Jonathan reveals to David that the next day is the new moon, and David’s absence would be noticed because his seat would be empty.

This verse highlights the loyalty and devotion Jonathan has for David. By informing David about the upcoming new moon and the fact that his absence would be conspicuous, Jonathan is ensuring that David is aware of the potential dangers he may face. He wants to protect David and give him a heads‑up about Saul’s intentions so that he can take appropriate action.

From a spiritual perspective, this verse also speaks to the importance of genuine friendship and loyalty. Jonathan’s selflessness and commitment to David’s well‑being serve as an example of true friendship. Their bond transcends personal gain, and Jonathan’s concern for David’s safety demonstrates a deep love and willingness to sacrifice for the sake of his friend.

In a broader sense, this passage reminds us of the challenges and trials that often accompany the path of righteousness. David, despite being anointed as the future king of Israel, faces adversity and the threat of death. However, God remains faithful throughout David’s journey, ultimately fulfilling His promise by establishing David as the king of Israel.

In summary is removed from this paragraph to avoid repetition: 1 Samuel 20:18 showcases the friendship between Jonathan and David, with Jonathan informing David of an upcoming event and the potential risks he faces. This verse emphasizes the importance of loyalty, selflessness, and the trust that exists between genuine friends. Additionally, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the midst of adversity and His ability to fulfill His promises in our lives.
