1 Samuel 21:3

Posted on 27 September 2025
Listen to this article

“Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative in which David, who was anointed by Samuel to be the future king of Israel, is on the run from King Saul. David seeks refuge in the city of Nob and comes to the priest Ahimelech, seeking provisions.

Seeking Provision and Trusting God’s Guidance:David’s request for five loaves of bread reflects his immediate need for sustenance as he and his companions were hungry and in need of food. It reveals his trust in God’s provision, even in challenging circumstances. We can learn from this that when we face difficulties or uncertainties in life, we should seek God’s guidance and trust in His provision.

The Importance of Humility:David, who would later become a great king, humbles himself before the priest Ahimelech and requests assistance. This humility is demonstrated by David’s acknowledgment that he has no ordinary provisions at hand. It serves as a reminder that humility is a virtue that allows us to recognize our own limitations and rely on others when necessary.

Jesus’ Reference to This Event:In the New Testament, Jesus refers to this incident when discussing the topic of ceremonial purity with the Pharisees (Matthew 12:1-8). Jesus highlights how David and his companions ate the consecrated bread, which was reserved for the priests alone. Jesus emphasizes that mercy and compassion are more important than strict adherence to ceremonial laws. This reference underscores the significance of prioritizing human need and extending grace to others.

God’s Faithfulness and Provision:In providing David with the bread, God demonstrates His faithfulness and care for His people. Despite David’s challenging circumstances, God ensures that he is provided for. This highlights God’s constant presence and willingness to meet our needs, even when we find ourselves in difficult situations. It encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness and provision throughout our own lives.

The Consequences of David’s Actions:Although David’s request for bread was genuine and based on necessity, his actions at Nob had unintended consequences. King Saul later discovers that Ahimelech helped David and orders the execution of the priests of Nob (1 Samuel 22:6-23). This incident serves as a reminder that our actions can have far‑reaching consequences, and we should strive to act responsibly and consider the potential impact on others.

Overall, 1 Samuel 21:3 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance, practicing humility, trusting in God’s provision, showing compassion to others, and being mindful of the consequences of our actions.
