1 Samuel 21:8

Listen to this article

“And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

Historical Context:During this time, David had already been anointed as the future king of Israel by the prophet Samuel, but Saul, the current king, was seeking to kill him out of jealousy and fear. David was forced to flee from Saul and go into hiding.

David’s Request:David approaches Ahimelech and asks for a spear or sword. He explains that he doesn’t have his own weapon because he had to leave in haste to escape Saul’s pursuit. David recognises the need for protection in his current circumstances.

Importance of the King’s Business:David mentions that he is without his sword and weapons because the king’s business required haste. This statement is somewhat ambiguous and has been interpreted in different ways. Some scholars believe that David is referring to his own business as a servant of the king, implying that he had been sent on a mission by Saul. Others suggest that David is speaking in a generic sense, meaning that he was in a hurry due to the urgency of his situation.

Trusting God’s Provision:It’s interesting to note that David seeks assistance from Ahimelech the priest, who is responsible for the tabernacle and its sacred objects. David’s request for a weapon indicates his need for physical protection, but it also shows his reliance on God’s provision in his time of distress.

Overall, this verse reveals David’s resourcefulness in seeking help and protection while he is on the run from Saul. It also highlights his trust in God’s provision, even in dire circumstances.
