“Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.”
Context: The book of 1 Samuel tells the story of Israel’s transition from a period of judges to the establishment of kingship. In this particular chapter, David, who had been anointed as the future king of Israel by the prophet Samuel, is on the run from King Saul, who became jealous and sought to kill David. David seeks refuge in the city of Nob, where the tabernacle and the priests were located.
The King’s Request: King Saul, in his desperation, sends for Ahimelech the priest and his family. Saul’s intention was to confront Ahimelech regarding his support for David. However, Saul’s request and subsequent actions would have far‑reaching consequences.
Ahimelech’s Response: Ahimelech and all the priests in Nob respond to the king’s summons and come before him. It’s important to note that Ahimelech was not aware of the animosity between Saul and David, as he did not have the knowledge of Saul’s pursuit of David. Therefore, he comes before the king innocently.
Unintended Consequences: The encounter between Saul and Ahimelech leads to tragic consequences. Saul accuses Ahimelech of conspiring against him and supporting David. Feeling threatened, Saul commands his guards to kill Ahimelech and the other priests of Nob. However, the guards refuse to harm the priests, so Saul turns to Doeg the Edomite, who carries out the order and kills eighty‑five priests along with their families.
