Listen to this article

“Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.”

Context: To understand the significance of this verse, let’s provide some context. In this chapter, Saul, the first king of Israel, was pursuing David, who was chosen by God to be the next king. David, knowing that Saul sought his life, fled to the cave of Adullam. While in the cave, David was joined by his family and a group of about 400 men who were distressed, in debt, and discontented.

“Abide thou with me”: David is speaking to Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, who was a priest and had helped David escape from Saul’s forces. David assures Abiathar that he can stay with him, indicating his willingness to protect and provide for him.

“Fear not”: David encourages Abiathar not to be afraid, suggesting that he would safeguard him against Saul’s threats. This reassurance reveals David’s compassion and concern for the safety of those who associated with him.

“For he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life”: David acknowledges that Saul’s pursuit is not limited to him alone; anyone who associates with David would also be targeted by Saul. David recognizes the danger faced by Abiathar and underscores their shared circumstances.

“But with me thou shalt be in safeguard”: David promises Abiathar that if he remains with him, he will be protected. David, as a skilled warrior and leader, believed he could provide a place of refuge and safety for those who chose to align themselves with him.
