1 Samuel 23:9

Posted on 28 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.”

In this verse, we find David, who was anointed by God to be the future king of Israel, facing a challenging situation. King Saul:the current ruler of Israel, had become jealous of David’s success and was seeking to harm him. David, being aware of Saul’s intentions:turns to Abiathar the priest and asks him to bring the ephod.

To understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to have some context. David and Saul:had a complicated relationship. Initially, Saul:had favored David and even made him a commander in his army after David’s victory over Goliath. However, as David gained more popularity and success, Saul’s jealousy:grew, and he began to perceive David as a threat to his own reign.

In verse 9, David’s knowledge of Saul’s secret intentions:reflects his discernment and wisdom. Despite Saul’s attempts:to harm him, David did not respond in haste or seek revenge. Instead, he turned to Abiathar the priest and asked for the ephod. The ephod was a sacred garment worn by the high priest, which contained the Urim and Thummim‑objects used for seeking God’s guidance and obtaining divine answers.

By requesting the ephod, David demonstrated his reliance on God’s guidance:in the midst of adversity. He sought divine counsel and desired to know God’s will:regarding his situation. David understood that his path to the kingship was not to be achieved through his own strength or strategies, but by aligning himself with God’s purpose:and seeking His direction.

This verse also highlights the importance of seeking wise counsel. David turned to Abiathar, who was a trusted priest, for guidance. In times of difficulty, it is valuable to seek advice from those who have wisdom and a close relationship with God:By involving Abiathar, David demonstrated his humility and recognized that he needed the counsel of a spiritual authority.

Additionally, we can draw an application from this verse for our own lives. When we encounter challenges or face opposition, it is essential to seek God’s guidance:and wisdom. Like David, we should not rely solely on our own understanding or human strategies but seek God’s direction:through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel from spiritually mature individuals.

In conclusion, 1 Samuel 23:9 demonstrates David’s discernment and reliance on God’s guidance:in the face of adversity. It reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s will:relying on His wisdom, and seeking wise counsel in our own lives. By following these principles, we can navigate through challenging circumstances with faith and trust in God’s plan:for us.
