1 Samuel 24:6

Posted on 1 October 2025
Listen to this article

“And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel provides a historical account of the transition of Israel’s leadership from judges to kings. In this particular passage, David, who had been anointed as the future king of Israel by the prophet Samuel, is being pursued by King Saul, the current king who had become jealous and resentful of David’s popularity and success.

Setting:At this point in the story, David and his men are hiding in the back of a cave in the wilderness of En Gedi. Saul, unaware of David’s presence in the cave, enters it to relieve himself.

David’s Response:When David’s men urge him to seize the opportunity to kill Saul, David responds with the words recorded in 1 Samuel 24:6. He emphatically refuses to harm Saul, recognizing him as the anointed of the Lord, and acknowledges that it is not his place to harm the king chosen by God.

Respect for God’s Anointed:David’s response reveals his deep respect for God’s anointing and authority. Despite the mistreatment and threats from Saul, David recognizes that Saul is still God’s chosen vessel for leading Israel. David acknowledges the divine appointment and refuses to take matters into his own hands.

Lessons for Believers:

  • Honoring Authority:David’s example teaches us the importance of respecting and honoring those in positions of authority, even when they act unjustly. It is not our role to take vengeance or undermine God’s appointed leaders.
  • Trusting God’s Timing:David’s refusal to harm Saul demonstrates his trust in God’s timing and sovereignty. Instead of resorting to violence or rebellion, he patiently waits for God to fulfill His promise of making him king in due course.
  • Submission to God’s Will:David’s words reflect his submission to God’s will and his reliance on God’s judgment. He leaves Saul’s fate in God’s hands, knowing that God will deal with Saul according to His wisdom.

Application:

  • Submission and Forgiveness:We should follow David’s example by submitting to God’s ordained authorities and forgiving those who have wronged us. Instead of seeking revenge, we should trust God to bring justice in His own time.
  • Patience and Trust:In difficult situations, we should exercise patience, trusting that God is in control and working all things together for our good. Just as David had to wait for God’s timing, we should trust that God’s plans for our lives will be fulfilled at the right time.
  • Prayer and Seeking God’s Will:When faced with challenging circumstances involving authority, it is essential to seek God’s guidance through prayer and study of His Word. By aligning ourselves with God’s will, we can navigate difficult situations with wisdom and discernment.

1 Samuel 24:6 showcases David’s integrity, humility, and trust in God’s plan. It provides valuable lessons for believers on honoring authority, trusting God’s timing, and submitting to God’s will.
